England winger Mark Cueto has been suspended for six weeks by Sale after being cited for making contact with the eye area in last week's Aviva Premiership defeat to Northampton.

The 31-year-old was an ever-present for England in their victorious RBS 6 Nations campaign, ending a long international try-scoring drought against Italy.

But if he is found guilty of making contact with the eye area of Christian Day at an RFU disciplinary hearing on Monday, Cueto faces a minimum ban of 12 weeks.

Earlier this season Cardiff Blues scrum-half Richie Rees missed 12 weeks for the same offence while Stade Français pair Julien Dupuy and David Attoub missed 23 and 52 weeks respectively last term.

And Cueto, who will now miss the rest of the season, faces an anxious wait with the World Cup in New Zealand starting in just five months.

Sale Executive Director of Sport Steve Diamond said: “I have spoken to owner Brian Kennedy and the coaching staff, and we decided on this action.

“Mark let the club and his team-mates down, and he is very upset that he has done so.

“He will present himself at the disciplinary hearing on Monday evening, and hopefully he will learn from his actions.”
