Martyn Williams
Williams admits Wales return unlikely

Wales flanker Martyn Williams believe the emergence of Sam Warburton as Wales' first choice No.7 during the RBS 6 Nations means he is destined to be left two caps short of his century.
Williams won his 98th cap against New Zealand in last year’s autumn internationals but has since been left out of the fold by Wales boss Warren Gatland.

With Warburton emerging as one of Wales’ most impressive performers during the 2010 Six Nations and a whole crop of new back-rowers coming through, 35-year-old Williams holds out little hope of a World Cup recall.

But Williams holds no bitterness towards Gatland’s decision to turn to the next generation.

“Sam Warburton was obviously outstanding during the championship,” Williams told the Western Mail.

“And then you have got some really good young players like Josh Turnbull, Justin Tipuric, Dan Lydiate, Rob McCusker and Toby Faletau, along with experienced guys in Ryan Jones, Andy Powell and Jonathan Thomas.

“We are lucky we have got such strength in that department.

“There are so many back-rowers coming through at the moment. So I’d be very surprised if I did get the call again.

“At my age, I don’t think it’s about playing yourself into the World Cup squad.

“The powers-that-be know what I can and can’t do. I will just keep plugging away here and giving my best week-in week-out.

“If I’m wanted, I’m wanted. If not, then you’ve just got to move on.

“It would be lovely to get over the 100, but I’m not going to lose any sleep over it if I don’t.
“Who knows? We’ll just have to wait and see.”
