Haskell vows England will be stronger for defeat

England might have fallen at the final hurdle in their bid for a first Grand Slam in eight years, but flanker James Haskell has urged his teammates not to panic, insisting their World Cup challenge is still on course.
Despite collecting the RBS 6 Nations trophy on Saturday, Martin Johnson’s men were left disappointed after a 24-8 defeat in Ireland banished any hopes of a first Grand Slam since 2003.

France’s 28-9 victory of Wales ensured England at least claimed the title but it was scant consolation following their abject performance at the Aviva Stadium.

But 25-year-old Haskell believes the experience could still prove vital as the Red Rose army turn their attentions to their World Cup opener against Argentina on September 10.

“Momentum was with us, the country was behind us, the fans were behind us and it was the start of something very special - that has taken a knock-back but it is not the end of the world,” said the Stade Francais flanker who has impressed in the absence of captain Lewis Moody and Tom Croft.

“It will do my head in for however long but this team will be richer for it. We have a special group of players with a great group of management.

“No major changes are needed. We were our own worst enemies [against Ireland]. If we can correct that, we can carry on this momentum.

“I don't think there is any need to panic. It is just very upsetting we have blown a Grand Slam.”
