Wales’ Six Nations campaign got off to a stuttering start as they crashed to an eighth successive defeat on the opening night when England overpowered Gatland’s men in Cardiff.
Three encouraging victories over Scotland, Italy and Ireland followed but as Wales entered the fray against France with a chance – albeit a slender one – of a first Six Nations crown since 2008, Gatland believes his players failed to do themselves justice.
"Unfortunately for us, I don't think we turned up," said Gatland.
"We had an opportunity. Sometimes as a team we love the underdog tag, we love when we're under a bit of pressure.
"But when the expectation is that we go out there and perform, we've struggled with those expectations. That's the disappointing thing."
Gatland also remained tight-lipped on the reasons behind defence coach Shaun Edwards’ absence in Paris.
Edwards did not make the trip to the French capital having been disciplined following an alleged confrontation with another backroom staff member.
"That's an internal matter that I'm not prepared to discuss in public," added Gatland.
