O’Leary started the Six Nations as first choice scrum-half for Ireland’s opening day win in Italy before scoring a try in the narrow defeat to France.
However, a back injury which had been troubling him going into the tournament finally got their better of him as he was ruled out at the last minute ahead of the 21-18 win over Scotland.
Eoin Reddan replaced him for that game and kept his place for the Saturday’s clash with Wales, only to be stretchered off with concussion after just a minute at the Millennium Stadium.
But Reddan is in contention for a place in the starting lineup when Declan Kidney announces his team later today.
“He will be monitored by the Ireland medical team who will follow the IRB concussion ‘Return to Play’ protocols to determine when he has fully recovered,” said the IRFU.
“He will also see a neurologist this week as part of the concussion management and at this point he is not being ruled out of contention.”
