Gatland hails Wales progress

Warren Gatland admitted Wales needed a slice of luck to beat Ireland 19-13 but still hailed the progress his side have made in the 2011 RBS 6 Nations.
After an opening round defeat to England at the Millennium Stadium extended Wales’ winless run to eight games, Gatland’s team have bounced back to record three straight Six Nations wins.

A final round win over France would secure at least second place and maybe even the Championship title if England slip up against Scotland and Ireland.

And that Gatland, who acknowledged the officials’ mistake in allowing Mike Phillips’ try, believes demonstrates Wales’ dip in form was exaggerated in some quarters.

“I hope it puts things into perspective,” said the former Ireland coach. “I don't think we're as bad as people were making out.

“We had a run of games we didn't win, but we were playing the best teams in the world.

“There were two very even teams and the game could have gone either way.

“We had a terrible start and we got back into the game.

“I can understand Ireland being frustrated with the try that was allowed.

“It's a decision that's gone our way, we've had some against us in the past, so I'm not complaining about it.”
