Italy were forced to fight back from an 18-6 deficit and Mallett believes the victory over the reigning Grand Slam champions was fully deserved.
"We looked like a really good rugby team, everyone contributed to this win,” said the South African whose side had run Ireland and Wales close in their previous home matches.
"I am really proud of my players and what they have done for Italian rugby supporters, who week in, week out support this team and have been fantastic.
“Sport’s a funny thing, you lose a few in a row and then things can change really quickly. But I think the wonderful thing about this Italian public is that they realise we are improving all the time. I’ve stuck with the same players for a few years now.
“The team played really well against Ireland at home, we played a great game against Wales and we had a bit of bad luck that day. But against a good French team it’s a huge achievement.
“I’ve got a great captain in Sergio Parisse. He has been a lone figure for Italy over the years but now I think he feels he is playing with a team where he just has to do his part and the others will play their part too.”
