Back in the mix - O'Leary fit for Wales trip

O'Leary back in selection frame

Munster scrum-half Tomas O'Leary has been passed fit for Saturday's RBS 6 Nations showdown against Wales after being one of 12 players drafted into Declan Kidney's Ireland squad.

A back injury ruled O’Leary out of the 21-18 defeat of Scotland with Leinster’s Eoin Reddan taking the starting berth and veteran scrum-half Peter Stringer filling in on the bench.

But O’Leary will be back in the mix for selection along with Munster teammates Donnacha Ryan, Mick O’Driscoll, Johne Murphy and Tony Buckley who have also been promoted to the squad.

Ireland team manager Paul McNaughton said: “Tomás is continuing rehab with his back and we are not ruling him out of any games at this stage.”

Leinster’s Fergus McFadden, Devin Toner, Kevin McLaughlin and Rhys Ruddock along with Ulster’s Andrew Trimble and Connacht’s Mike McCarthy and Gavin Duffy are the others included for the team announcement which will be made on Tuesday.

Kidney’s main fitness concern rests over second row Leo Cullen who suffered a groin injury in Leinster’s defeat of the Scarlets.

Cullen had to come off after only 28 minutes of the 26-15 defeat of the Scarlets but Leinster indicated the substitution was precautionary.
