Lock Richie Gray – who missed the defeat to Wales through illness – has now picked up a knee strain while his captain and partner in the Scottish boiler room Alastair Kellock has a bruised hand and a neck strain.

There was also plenty of evidence of war wounds elsewhere with fly-half Ruaridh Jackson, who made his full Six Nations debut against Ireland; centre Sean Lamont; and record points scorer Chris Paterson all receiving bruising.

Flanker John Barclay also has a knee contusion but Scotland’s medical team do have the luxury of a two-week gap until the next round of matches when Robinson returns to Twickenham.

And Scotland team doctor James Robson is hoping they will have a full complement of players for the Calcutta Cup clash.

He said: “We will be closely monitoring all players over the next 48 hours but at this juncture none of the injuries is giving us any serious cause for concern."
