Shaun Edwards has called on Wales to cut out the yellow cards
Edwards called for mellow yellow approach

Defence coach Shaun Edwards has urged his Wales players to clean up their act ahead of the Italy game after seeing their RBS Six Nations assault hit by ill-discipline.
Wales have a poor disciplinary record in Six Nations tournaments with 21 players being sent to the sin-bin in total, only Saturday’s opponents Italy having a worse record with 35.

And Warren Gatland has watched as three of his stars have been forced to sit out for ten minutes this campaign, Craig Mitchell, Bradley Davies and Lee Byrne all seeing yellow.

Wales’ card count is almost double that of France’s and Ireland’s but Edwards maintains they are hell-bent on mellowing ahead of a visit to Stadio Flaminio.

“Discipline is something we have stressed this week because it's always important at this level,” Edwards said.

“Our yellow cards are well documented, though, during those games, we thought maybe the opposition should have had yellow cards as well, particularly England.

“But you have to go on what the referee decides, but it's an issue we have worked hard on this week and hopefully against Italy we will show a disciplined, but aggressive, approach.

“Crazy as it sounds, going down to 13 men and holding our line can be very character building.

“That can mould the team and bring them together. Hopefully, it has done that for the rest of the season, though we don’t want to be in that position again.”
