O'Driscoll calls on Ireland to get smart

Ireland captain Brian O'Driscoll is adamant his team need to start playing 'smart' rugby if they are to reignite their stuttering RBS 6 Nations campaign against Scotland.
Only a late Ronan O’Gara drop goal saved Ireland from defeat against Scotland before they lost to France despite outscoring Les Bleus three tries to one.

In both games, their performances were riddled with errors despite a commitment to an expansive form of rugby.

And O’Driscoll maintains they need to learn when to attack and when to keep it simple if they are to get back to winning ways at Murrayfield.

He said: “As much as we want to play a running game, we must also play smart. If you only play one type of game the opposition do their analysis and you become easy to stop.

“You must have variety, mix it up and constantly keep defences guessing.

“We've probably been guilty of not kicking the ball as much as we could have, but we're on the right road.

“It's a case of tweaking the balance of the game we're trying to play.

“Sometimes you can kick to attack and sometimes you can run out of defence, it's about picking the right options at the right times.”
