But having won plaudits for his impressive performances in the back row alongside Kelly Brown and John Barclay, collectively known as the Killer B’s, Beattie was forced to watch from the sidelines as Scotland lost their first two Six Nations matches.

He missed five months of the season with a shoulder injury and Robinson didn’t consider him ready as Scotland slipped to a sixth straight defeat in Paris before a demoralising 24-6 loss against Wales.

Robinson reacted by ringing the changes as seven players come into the starting line-up and Beattie is desperate to hit the ground running in his first match in the Scottish jersey since last year’s summer tour.

“It is a massive show of faith from Andy,” said Beattie who will win his 15th cap on Sunday.

“But it is a great feeling to be back involved. I see it as a year out I've had, but I look forward to repaying that faith with a winning performance this weekend.

“I thought I might be back a bit earlier and had a long-shot chance of being back for the first couple of games.

“I would say my performances for Scotland have definitely been a notch above where my average performances have been for Glasgow over the past year.

“I can't deny I love playing at Murrayfield and can't wait to get out there again. You have a sense of being part of something.

“This is a game against Ireland in the Six Nations and it does not get much bigger. The sense of occasion is one thing, and to run out in front of 60,000 screaming daft Scotsmen is something that will definitely get you going.”
