But the 25-year-old declared himself only satisfied with his display and says he is not about to second guess Gatland’s thought process.
He said: “With regards my role in Italy, you will have to ask the coaches about that.
“There is always room for improvement and I definitely don’t want to get ahead of myself.
“I will compose myself and just hope to get selected for that one, too.
“If we can beat them, we are looking at Ireland at home and hopefully we can pick up three victories on the bounce."

His frustration at the Liberty Stadium prompted a move to Top 14 side Perpignan but nevertheless he admitted he was nervous about reverting to his favoured position at Murrayfield.
He added: “There was a little bit of doubt in my mind, having not started there for quite a while.
“Obviously you are aware there is publicity around you, especially for anyone wearing No.10 in Wales.
“But setting up Shane’s try so early set the scene for me and was a huge confidence boost.
“I was happy with my kicking as well, particularly considering I hadn’t started a game as the main kicker for some time.”
