Ashton went on to score again, his fifth try in eight caps in England’s 26-19 triumph in Wales, but faced backlash, both from the media and from a concerned England coaching staff behind the scenes, over his risky celebrations.
The Northampton wing admits he lost all control in the heat of the moment and, after being shown the error of his ways, is determined his ‘swan-diving’ days are over.
“I’ve taken a lot of stick,” said Ashton.
“It was all right as long as I scored but, if I had dropped it, I would have been in a whole world of pain. International tries are hard to come by.
“Thankfully I didn’t [drop it]. It happened once before for Northampton.
“Someone hit me as I went over and I dropped it.
“I won’t be doing that again. I didn’t want to do the celebration but it just happened.
“I didn’t mean it to happen – it was just a little explosion. We even had [Attack coach] Brian Smith putting up coaching tips about diving over the try-line – I will have to come up with something else.”
