The Glasgow lock, who Guscott also likened to Bambi on ice, caught the eye with his ball carrying and two desperate last-ditch tackles receiving rave reviews from the French press.

But ahead of the Wales clash Gray is determined to prove the France performance, which has lead to rumours of a move to the Top 14, was not a one-off.

“I’ve actually kept (Guscott’s) article, it’s back in my flat. It was an extra driving force going into the game against France,” said Gray, who came on as a late replacement in last year’s heartbreaking 31-24 loss in Cardiff.

“I hear he’s apologised since. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I’ll try to change it as much as possible with my performances.

“However, I can’t really comment about Guscott more than that because he played before my time.

“My agent hasn’t yet fielded any calls from French clubs but I know there has been a lot of stuff in their media and the boys have been giving me a tough time about it.

“All the slagging from the rest of the squad helps keep me down to earth. I wasn’t even aware of the reaction from the crowd because when you play you get lost in the game.”
