Tighthead Murray in particular was singled out by referee Wayne Barnes for collapsing the scrum on multiple occasions and would eventually concede a first-half penalty try.

But Kellock maintains the scrum was a collective failing by Scotland’s pack..

He said: “France are a very strong scrummaging team but over the last couple of seasons so have we been and that's what is most disappointing.

"Euan can only play as well as the rest of the pack. They're going to put pressure through the tighthead - every team will try to. We've got to make sure we're helping him out.

"It wasn't on Euan - it was on all of us. We were all very upset with the way the scrum went.

“"Wayne Barnes was probably left with no option [for the penalty try] but the most disappointing thing for me was the first scrum, where we went out with an intent and attitude but didn't deliver.

“For me that's massively important, and it is for the psychology of the referee. If you can show that you're getting parity or are dominant then the referee is more inclined to look on it more favourably.

"But it's not about starting from scratch. There's a lot we can take out of the Paris game and we have started not just working on the things that went badly, but also adding to the things that went well.”
