A day later in Rome Italy were only denied an historic victory over Ireland by Ronan O’Gara’s last-gasp drop goal that helped Declan Kidney’s men sneak home 13-11.
And though minds are now drifting to the mouthwatering clash between England and France at Twickenham on February 26, Wells claims his side underestimate Italy at their peril.
“Italy are difficult to break down," said Wells. "We always get slated by the Press after we play them but everyone has the same trouble.
“Some of these games are about winning ugly and I suggest Ireland left Rome relieved to have won.
“Italy are big, experienced lads with some 660 caps between them. I believe that's more than any other team in the Six Nations.
“They have been together for a long time and a lot of their forwards are gnarled guys who have played in the Aviva Premiership or the French top 14.
“They are a very good set-piece side and they'll give us problems.”
