Gatland admits Hook dilemma

Wales boss Warren Gatland admits he is yet to decide where to play the multi-talented James Hook in the Welsh backline ahead of the opening RBS 6 Nations match against England.
Hook, who has confirmed he will move from the Ospreys to Top 14 team Perpignan in the summer, has been shuffled between fly-half, centre and full-back in his 47 caps for his country.

It is not a conundrum Gatland is any closer to solving with Stephen Jones and Jamie Roberts his preferred 10-12 axis.

With full-back Lee Byrne on the comeback trail to full-fitness, Gatland admitted he will make his decision based on the players’ performances in training ahead of the February 4 match.

He said: “We have options with James at fly-half, full-back and midfield. He has not started may times at 10 but when he has started he has caused the opposition problems.

“He is an option at 10 and we have not discounted that.

“I think Stephen Jones has done really well for us and he needs someone to be putting him under pressure which really brings the best out of Stephen. He generally responds to that sort of pressure.

“Lee has not had a lot of rugby and James gives us options at full-back. We will see how the rest of this week and next week’s training goes in terms of finding the best combinations for this side.”

Having lost Adam You don’t want tens in the same mould. We also have Rhys Priestland who offers us a running threat so it is nice to be able to have the difference of 10s being able to play a different style of game.
