Scotland No 8 Johnnie Beattie has been thrown an RBS 6 Nations lifeline after being named in coach Andy Robinsons' 34-man squad.
The 25-year-old admitted he expected to miss the opening contest with defending champions France after failing to prove his fitness following five months out after shoulder surgery.

But the selection reveals the 14-times capped Glasgow Warrior is certainly in Robinson’s championship plans, and he is called-up alongside two uncapped Warriors teammates.

Forwards Jon Welsh, a 24-year-old loose-head prop, and 20-year-old flanker Robert Harley will join the squad at Robinson’s three-day training camp at St Andrews starting on January 24.

Bristol-born Bath back Jack Cuthbert, who qualifies through his Glasweigian-mother, is the third uncapped player named ahead of the February 5 clash at the Stade de France.

The trio are promoted to the seniors after featuring in Scotland A’s 25-0 victory over the USA Eagles in November, and wing Simon Danielli also returns after missing the autumn matches with shoulder problems.

Scotland squad:

Backs: Joe Ansbro (Northampton Saints), Mike Blair (Edinburgh), Jack Cuthbert (Bath), Simon Danielli (Ulster), Nick De Luca (Edinburgh), Max Evans (Glasgow Warriors), Alex Grove (Worcester Warriors), Ruaridh Jackson (Glasgow Warriors), Greig Laidlaw (Edinburgh), Rory Lamont (Toulon), Sean Lamont (Scarlets), Rory Lawson (Gloucester), Dan Parks (Cardiff Blues), Chris Paterson (Edinburgh), Hugo Southwell (Stade Francais) and Nikki Walker (Ospreys)

Forwards: John Barclay, Johnnie Beattie (both Glasgow Warriors), Kelly Brown (Saracens), Geoff Cross, Ross Ford (both Edinburgh), Richie Gray, Dougie Hall, Robert Harley (all Glasgow Warriors), Nathan Hines (Leinster), Allan Jacobsen (Edinburgh), Alastair Kellock (Glasgow Warriors), Scott Lawson (Gloucester), Moray Low (Glasgow Warriors), Scott MacLeod (Edinburgh), Euan Murray (Newcastle Falcons), Ross Rennie (Edinburgh) and Richie Vernon and Jon Welsh (both Glasgow Warriors)
