Tait plays down England chances

Centre Mathew Tait has played down his England chances ahead of the 2011 RBS 6 Nations maintaining his first priority is to be firing on all cylinders for Sale.

Tait has fallen down the Red Rose pecking order since starting four games in last year’s Six Nations and did not feature in the recent set of autumn internationals having been hampered by fitness concerns.

And the versatile 24-year-old, who was one of England’s star performers in the 2007 World Cup final, maintains he is not thinking about returning to the international fold until his form merits it.

He said: “I think I had a missed call from Brian Smith just asking how I was after getting back and playing for a bit.

“But I’ve not really been expecting it, I’ve not really been playing and I’ve had bigger things on my mind.

“I just need to get some form, play well, and hope that I can force my way back in.

“It’s just a case of getting a run of games and some match fitness and form.

“In terms of forcing my way back in I’ve just got to play well here and see what happens.”
