His last appearance in a red shirt lasted only 23 minutes against Toulon on October 16 before he broke down – a persistent calf problem taking its toll.

But after coming through 40 minutes unscathed for Shannon earlier in the week Flannery is on the road to appearing at this year’s Six Nations – after missing most of the 2010 competition through suspension.

And Munster head coach Tony McGahan is delighted to have one of his leaders nearing a return for his side.

“We’d certainly like to integrate him (Jerry Flannery) as soon as possible,” said McGahan.

“Jerry is a super professional. He’s extremely driven and he’s certainly a huge driving force behind the forward pack.

“He’s a real follow-me type of player and over the last few years he has certainly added to his leadership credentials.

“He got through 40 minutes on Tuesday with Shannon so we’ll see how he pulls up after the Irish camp and then make a decision.”
