Abdel Benazzi's France v Scotland preview
19 February 2003, 4:44 pm
I had mixed feelings after the match against England.
I found it was of a very high level in terms of organisation and atmosphere but a quite frustrating spectacle. It was a long-awaited clash, the English were craving to win it while the French obviously did not want such a tough start, but had no choice.

The result made sense as the English had all the pressure on their shoulders. They had to win and they did.

Their main strength was to put a lot of pressure on the French team, and ask them a lot of questions for the entire 80 minutes. France failed to raise their game for the occasion, even if they did a little better towards the end. At least this match allowed them to point out their weaknesses and the areas they need to improve.

However, even if they lost, I am convinced the title race remains very open.

As far as Scotland are concerned I would brand France favourites but I remain very wary of Scotland. Let's not forget that they posed us a lot of problems last year. Some might be tempted to say this is going to be easy for France after Scotland's heavy defeat to Ireland at the weekend but I fear they might react well from the setback.

Meanwhile, France will have to hold their nerve. This could well be either a one-sided French win or a shock victory by a Scots team full of surprises. Gregor Townsend, who could be their number 10, is to be feared and he could change the course of the match.
