Problems mount for Gatland after White takes his leave

Warren Gatland's preparations for next year's World Cup sank to a new low after fitness guru Craig White handed in his notice.
Gatland was handed a deal through to the 2015 World Cup on the eve of the autumn internationals but failed to repay the faith shown in him – guiding Wales to three defeats and a humiliating draw with Fiji.

The run of results leaves Wales with just two wins from their last 13 Tests and things got little better off the field, with the Kiwi widely condemned for publicly stripping Ryan Jones of the captaincy.

The international action may be over until the RBS Six Nations begins but White, who joined after the 2008 Grand Slam success, has handed Gatland another headache by opting to leave and study for a doctorate in nutrition and health in Thailand.

“I always devote myself totally to any challenge I accept so it would be wrong to continue in place while I was pursuing this new career direction,” said White.

Head strength and conditioning coach Adam Beard will take over White’s duties and Gatland paid tribute to the departing coach.

“I want to thank him personally and on behalf of Welsh rugby for the skill and dedication he has shown throughout his time in Wales,” said Gatland.

“I know he is sorry to be leaving before the Rugby World Cup, but Craig is not the sort of man who would want to remain in place after he has decided that his career focus lies elsewhere. We all wish him well on his new venture.

“I have made a lot of good friends in Wales and I will be watching the team’s progress with interest and wish them all well for the challenges ahead.”
