Kidney wary of Argentina threat up front

Declan Kidney insists plenty of pride is at stake as an intense rivalry continues to brew between Ireland and Argentina.
The last time the sides met, Ireland’s 17-3 triumph at Croke Park in 2008 ensured their qualification as second tier seeds for the 2011 World Cup.

The two teams have clashed at the previous three World Cups with the South Americans claiming two victories to Ireland’s one.

Ireland are edging ahead in the world rankings and Kidney played down the fact that an away win would see Las Pumas overtake their hosts into fourth place.

"It's only when the rankings have a material effect like they did two years ago that you pay much attention to them," said Kidney.

"This is all about winning a Test match and the rankings points will take care of themselves as a result of that.

"The rankings aren't at the forefront of our minds like they were two years ago.

"They've picked five forwards and two backs on the bench so it's no secret what area they'll have a go at us.

"Argentina are hugely powerful up front - if they're not the best scrimmaging unit in the world they're in the top group.

"They're good at carrying the ball and retaining possession for long periods of time.

"But with Felipe Contepomi at fly-half they can play in various ways, going wide or kicking. They're not just physical, they're skilful too.”
