Rees: Jones will prove his worth
27 November 2010, 12:30 pm
By Sportsbeat
Newly appointed Wales captain Matthew Rees has backed Ryan Jones, the man he replaced, to bounce back from his public demotion against New Zealand.
Ospreys No.8 Jones was publicly stripped of the captaincy after his error handed Fiji the penalty that secured the South Sea Islanders a 16-16 draw last weekend.

Rees, who led Wales against South Africa and Australia, was immediately installed by boss Warren Gatland for the clash with the All Blacks.

But after Gatland opted to keep faith with Jones in the starting XV, Rees has tipped the 29-year-old to prove his international career is far from over.

“He was obviously disappointed by the Fiji result as much as anyone in the camp,” he said.

“But he’s trained well. He’s been given the chance to start and I’m sure he’s going to take his chance with both hands.

“I am sure he’s going to put in a big performance.

“Ryan has been around a long time. He’s an experienced player and these things happen in sport. It’s just a matter of getting back on with it.

“It’s great to see him back playing and I am sure he will have a few points to prove.”
