Edwards wants healthy environment for Wales Under-20s

New Wales under-20 coach Darren Edwards has underlined the value of a positive environment to keeping the conveyor belt of talent into the Welsh senior team going.
Winger George North was playing for the Under-18s in the Five Nations this year before going onto make his try-scoring debut against South Africa while fellow 18-year-old wideman Tom Prydie became Wales youngest debutant in the RBS 6 Nations match against Italy.

And Edwards, who is combining his Under-20s role with his responsibilities as attack coach at the Newport Gwent Dragons, wants the next crop of talent to be given the freedom to shine.

He said: “We really do have to target the environment because there has to be a pathway for the players into professional rugby first and then into the senior team second so it is important that we create an environment that is intense, enjoyable, but also a proud environment to be in.

“The biggest thing we worked on was training ground transfer, everything we did on the training ground had meaning for what we did in the game on the weekend.

“It is really nice to have a reward where what we’re working hard on is getting delivered in the game and when we reflect on it it’s nice to get a bit of recognition for what we doing.

“It’s not just physical and results development it’s also mental development.

“It’s a pretty young coaching team, involved in the game in the recent past so hopefully there’s knowledge there that we can still impart on players.”
