Banahan desperate to take his chance at centre

Matt Banahan admits he's loving life at centre and is ready for the switch at international level for the clash with Samoa.
The Bath back has won his previous five caps on the wing but after impressing inside at the Rec he’s got the nod from team manager Martin Johnson to add plenty of bulk to the centres.

The 23-year-old will partner club mate Shontayne Hape in midfield and is desperate to press his claims for permanent inclusion in the England ranks.

“I actually prefer playing in the centre – I like to carry the ball a bit more and there is a lot more decision-making but as long as I’m playing for England I don’t really care where I play,” said the 6ft 7in, 17st 9lb powerhouse.

“The game’s changing but your body shape doesn’t really matter – you can play anywhere on the pitch as long as your skills are up to standard.

“I always felt I could play at centre and I’m really enjoying it so hopefully I can show what I can do.

“I was given the chance at 13 at Bath last season and I’ve carried that momentum on and I’m adding strings to my bow now.”
