Mike Blair fires a pass away for club side Edinburgh
Blair: set piece holds the key

Scotland captain Mike Blair admits the chances of pulling off a huge upset against the All Blacks rest on getting the set piece spot on.
Last year Andy Robinson’s men pulled off a shock win over Australia at Murrayfield after neutralising the strength of the Wallabies backs.

But New Zealand present an even greater challenge with world-class players in every department.

And stand-in captain Blair admits guiding Scotland to their first ever defeat of the All Blacks will require dominance up front and in the lineout.

“The set-piece is always important to get a foot-hold in the game, so Ross Ford is key in relation to the line-out,” said Blair. “Everything you do is built from it.

“If you get a solid scrum you can take advantage of the full-back line against the opposition defence five metres back and get across the gain line.

“It would be a massive achievement for me to beat the All Blacks on a personal level as captain and for everyone wearing the Scotland jersey.

“If we can match the All Blacks for skill and enthusiasm with the crowd behind us it will put us in a position where we can beat the New Zealanders.”
