Prop Tony Buckley was hoping to establish himself as Ireland's first-choice prop in the autumn internationals

Buckley and Kearney doubtful for Samoa test

Munster prop Tony Buckley could miss the remainder of Ireland's autumn international programme after sustaining a hip injury against World champions South Africa.

Buckley is set to be sidelined for several weeks after picking up a hip flexor injury in Saturday’s 23-21 defeat at the Aviva Stadium and hooker Damien Varley has been drafted in as cover.

Full-back Rob Kearney is also a doubt for this weekend’s visit of Samoa after withdrawing late against the Springboks with a knee injury.

Ireland were the width of a post away from securing a draw against the 2007 World Cup winners after as Ronan O’Gara failed to convert Rob Kearney’s try.

But coach Declan Kidney admits his troops were beaten by the better side.

“You get what you deserve,” said Kidney. “I wouldn’t be hiding behind a ball off the post. We did a bit of damage to ourselves by losing the field position battles and that’s not just down to one or two players.

“I still believe we’re capable of beating anybody but also we’re capable of losing to anybody if we don’t get it right and we need to get those smarts right.”
