Kidney sounds note of caution ahead of Boks clash

Coach Declan Kidney has warned Ireland to underestimate South Africa at their peril on Saturday - despite the Springboks' relatively rookie starting XV.
The world champions’ absentee list is a cause for much optimism for Kidney’s men with 11 players missing including high-profile names John Smit, Heinrich Brüssow, Schalk Burger, Fourie du Preez, and JP Pietersen.

Added to that the fact that centre Jean de Villiers faces a late fitness test on a groin problem and the Irish fans could be forgiven for expecting their first game at the Aviva Stadium to be a cause for celebration.

But coach Kidney has told his side to expect no favours from the under-strength world champions.

“They have changes in their team, but when you look at the rugby population they have, who’s to know if the guys who have come over might not be the ones who end up holding down a place?,” said Kidney.

“Every tour throws up something and I’m sure this one will throw up combinations for South Africa that might make them even stronger.”

But skipper Brian O’Driscoll is adamant his Ireland squad are ready for the challenge.

“I have felt very good in training this week and am really looking forward to facing the Springboks. It would be great to christen the Aviva Stadium in a Test capacity with a memorable performance, on and off the pitch,” said O'Driscoll.
