Street has high hopes for the next World Cup

England Women's head coach Gary Street believes his squad's mixture of experience and youth will help them win the next World Cup in 2014.
Street, whose side finished second behind New Zealand in the Women’s Rugby World Cup last month, has named nine new faces in his elite squad of 44, all of whom have played for the England Under 20s.

All but two players of the 26-woman world cup squad are still in the mix, but Sarah Beale and Amber Penrith do not feature after deciding to take some time away from the sport.

England, who are now in the first year of four-year cycle in preparation for the next tournament, will look to add to their five consecutive RBS 6 Nations grand slam crown’s this season, but Street insists future progress is what is most important and success this season is not a priority.

Street said: “We are fortunate that our World Cup squad was relatively young and we haven’t had many retirements so we have stability and experience here.

"However, this squad is all about development and looking to the future.

“We cannot just think about this season and that is why we are giving players who we think could be major international players in the future a chance now.

"We think it’s important to take the opportunity to accelerate their development now rather than leaving it for a couple of years even if they don’t make an immediate impact.

“Obviously the world cup defeat still hurts desperately but we are not here to sit and wallow. We are looking ahead. This season is a new challenge and we need to keep improving.”
