Andy Robinson could be next Lions leader

Scotland coach Andy Robinson is rumoured to be in line to become British & Irish Lions coach for the 2013 tour to Australia after newly-appointed manager Andy Irvine talked up his credentials.

Robinson was appointed Scotland coach last summer, leading them to fifth in the 2010 RBS 6 Nations and recording home and away wins over Argentina in his first year in charge.

Sir Ian McGeechan is also among a list of potential candidates but Irvine believes Robinson – a member of two Lions tours – would be the perfect candidate.

“Andy is doing a great job with Scotland and he ticks so many boxes from being an internationalist and Lions tourist as a player first,” said Irvine.

“Then to coaching England, the Lions and now Scotland so he has to be a very strong candidate to get the job.

“Ian said after the last tour that he wouldn’t be interested in coaching but he said that after three other tours as well, we have very much got to go with an open mind on him.”
