Brian McLaughlin
McLaughlin will be hoping for less nerve-racking wins as the Heineken Cup progresses
McLaughin's wise words key to win over Aironi

Ulster coach Brian McLaughlin was relieved after his players eventually pulled themselves together to clinch a bonus-point win in their Heineken Cup opener against Aironi.
McLauglin’s side took a narrow five-point lead into half-time but finally ran out 30-6 winners over the Italians after some ferocious words from their coach at the break.

Ireland centre Andrew Timble opened the scoring before further tries from fly-half Ian Humphreys, wing Simon Danielli and Springbok Ruan Pienaar sealed the victory.

Bath and Biarritz complete Pool 3 and McLaughlin still feels the Ulstermen have plenty of improving to do in order to progress to the knock-out phase.

“The way to describe it was we got a great win but we can still play better," said McLaughlin.

“We are chuffed with the result but we never mentioned the bonus point.

“We knew though that going into to Europe it would be very important for us to get maximum points.

“At half-time we talked about maintaining tempo and intensity which had been lacking in previous games while we also talked about accuracy, but that sort of let us down.

“In the second half we got there in the end, but we still made a few mistakes.”
