Godman ruled out of RBS 6 Nations

Scotland fly-half Phil Godman suffered RBS 6 Nations heartache after a serious knee injury has ruled him out for six months.
The 23-cap international will require surgery to repair his right anterior knee ligament which he tore in an Edinburgh training session, heaping more bad news on the Gunners after losing their opening three Magners League matches.

The 28-year-old had targeted the autumn internationals for his Scotland return but he has now set his sights on a comeback before the end of the season.

Godman is desperate to prove his fitness to Scotland coach Andy Robinson before the 2011 World Cup after being overlooked for selection for the tournament in 2007.

"I am targeting being available to go to the World Cup, which is still a massive ambition for me, so I have to focus on my rehabilitation," said Godman.

The cruciate ligament injury has the reputation of being one of the most severe, but Scotland team doctor James Robson is optimistic about his return to action.

"I have spoken to Phil this morning and there are many examples of players returning to full international duty having sustained this kind of injury," said Dr Robson.

"From our own national squad Sean Lamont, Jason White and Nathan Hines have all recovered to play a full part in international rugby after anterior cruciate ligament damage.

“The Edinburgh and Scotland medical teams will be working to deliver him ready to be considered for selection for the Rugby World Cup squad next year.”
