Scotland head coach Andy Robinson has led the tributes to former Scotland captain, British Lion and pioneering coach Jim Greenwood following his death on Sunday, aged 81.
Greenwood played 20 times for Scotland making his debut against France in 1952 and represented the Barbarians on 18 occasions.

He was also part of the celebrated 1955 British and Irish Lions tour of South Africa which the Lions made famous for their cohesive ‘total rugby’ before a broken shoulder against Ireland ended his career in 1959.

His book ‘Total Rugby’ helped make his name as a world-class coach, and current Scotland boss Robinson, who was coached by Greenwood, praised his philosophical approach to the game.

“He was the first top-class coach I worked with and he had a fantastic was of simplifying the game,” said Robinson.

“His book ‘Total Rugby’ showed that he was ahead of his time. He was a great inspiration for us as first year students at Loughborough where he lectured us, challenged us and made us think about the game.”

Former Scotland coach Ian McGeechan added “Jim Greenwood’s thinking was on a different level. As a student I read his books and it was clear he was an outstanding rugby thinker. He was way ahead of his time.”
