Three further Tests followed in 2008 before Martin Johnson became England team manager and Wigglesworth went to the back of the scrum-half pecking order.

His fortunes declined in tandem with club side Sale’s as the Sharks went from Premiership champions in 2007 to second bottom last season.

Both those factors prompted a move south to Saracens and, with the prospect of playing behind a forward-moving pack this term, Wigglesworth is determined not to let his Stade de France baptism of fire become his sole claim to fame.

“That is a great memory of mine in my career,” he said. “To get a try on your debut against France in Paris is the stuff dreams are made of.

“Getting that feeling back has been my sole focus and that was a key reason for my move here.

“I came to Saracens was to experience something completely different. There are a lot of different
coaches here who I feel I can learn off.

“There’s a hell of a lot of quality around and that gives you a kick up the arse. I feel I needed a different environment to get that extra one to two per cent out of me.

“Scrum-half is probably the strongest position in terms of strength in depth. You have got five or six players going for that one spot which makes it tough for everyone.

“I can guarantee if I am still not in the team next year, it won’t be for lack of trying.”
