Wales plan extra June warm-up game

Wales will play a 'special' game in June to mark the 130-year anniversary of the Welsh Rugby Union as part of their 2011 Rugby World Cup preparations.

The game at the Millennium Stadium will precede home and away fixtures against England on 6 and 13 August respectively, as well as a potential encounter with a southern hemisphere country - thought to be Argentina – in Cardiff.

In the past, August fixtures have been restricted to World Cup years, but the WRU is keen to make the financially lucrative June test a regular fixture.

Roger Lewis, the Union’s group chief executive, said: “We've got something special in June to celebrate 130 years of the WRU.

“There are a couple of very special warm-up matches in August against England and perhaps something else as well.

“We've got a very big meeting with our friends from another southern hemisphere country.”

Wales kick off their World Cup campaign in New Zealand against holders South Africa on 11 September, before pool games against Samoa, Namibia and Fiji.
