Maddocks satisfied with learning process
14 July 2010, 3:29 pm
By Sportsbeat
England women's sevens head coach Barry Maddock maintains his rookie side have learnt some valuable lessons after having to make do with the European 7's Plate in Russia.
Last year, an experienced England team brushed aside all comers aside as they were crowned champions but pool defeats to both Italy and France meant they were out of the running this time around.

But they did have the consolation of silverware as they beat Portugal in the semi-finals before a late Natasha Hunt penalty saw off hosts Russia 12-10 in the final.

Yet with many of their big stars absent ahead of the forthcoming World Cup, Maddocks was satisfied with his team’s progress.

He said: “This has been a very tense weekend. There have been lots of ups and downs but overall this has been a great experience for our young players, who’ll go away having learned a lot.

“There is no doubt that the standard of this competition has risen this year.”
