And despite being one of the most renowned coaches in world rugby, Ashton insists he will have no problems getting his hands dirty in National Two North.
“After starting my career with the club and moving back to the area recently and seeing a lot of Bill and Malcolm it was probably inevitable that this would happen,” said Ashton, who led England to the World Cup final in 2007.
“I suppose everything has now come full circle for me and I’ve got the chance to give something back to the club and I’m really looking forward to doing that.
“I’ve always kept a close eye on the club and I know Mark (Nelson) well from when I coached him as a player so it should be good.
“Mark will maintain overall charge of the team and selection but can have my opinion when he wants it. It’s my job to try and help his players improve.
“I’ve still got my coaching consultancy business to run but Fylde train on a Tuesday and Thursday and I hope to get involved regularly.
“I also try to keep weekends free these days so I plan to get to as many home games as possible.
“I saw a couple of games last season and they’ve got a few lively players so it should be good fun.”
