Warren Gatland
Gatland wants Wales to attack
Gatland admits Wales must take their chances at Carisbrook

Head coach Warren Gatland admits Wales face an uphill struggle in their opening Test against New Zealand - but insists they will have their share of chances in Dunedin.
Wales go into Saturday’s game looking to end a 57-year winless streak against the All-Blacks, having never tasted victory in New Zealand’s back yard.

Gatland’s men can also expect an intimidating atmosphere in Dunedin as the two teams contest the final Test at the historic Carisbrook Stadium before it is replaced by a new indoor complex for next year’s World Cup.

But having conceded four tries in their 66-28 defeat of Ireland, Gatland insists the New Zealand back line is not invincible and is adamant points are there for the taking if his team can step up to the challenge.

“We’re not underestimating the task, the history of this being the last game on Carisbrook and the tradition that the All Blacks are very hard to beat here,” said Gatland.

“We’ve got to come with the attitude we’re not just here to make up the numbers but we’re very well aware of the task ahead.

“I thought at times, with Ireland scoring 28 points, there’s opportunities. One of the things about the All Blacks in recent seasons is their defence has been pretty hard to crack, and they would have been disappointed to concede four tries.

“But some of the rugby they played, the offloading and counter-attacking, was as good as I’ve seen from an All Blacks team for a long time.”
