Massimo Giovanelli's Italy preview
3 February 2003, 2:10 pm
This could be a year when Italy start to progress and it is a very important year for our rugby.
In the November Tests we looked more solid and secure, although obviously we must still improve.

Our first objective must be Wales - Wales are in a little bit of difficulty and they could be vulnerable. They no longer can depend on (Neil) Jenkins for everything.

We must try and match Scotland, and aim for third or fourth place.

France are potential champions and England are always strong, and I think that Ireland could be competitive, but only if they manage to avoid injuries.

The atmosphere in the Italy team has noticeably changed since (John) Kirwan replaced (Brad) Johnstone as coach. The team are a bit more relaxed under Kirwan and that creates a different mood. There is a bit more team spirit.

I think Alessandro Troncon is a very good choice as captain in place of Alessandro Moscardi. He (Troncon) is the right choice for the Six Nations, although we must wait and see for the World Cup.

We have a very young team even if there are old heads like Diego (Dominguez) and (Paolo) Vaccari to call on. In recent matches I have been particularly impressed by our new prop Leandro Castrogiovanni, who is a very dynamic physical presence.

But the thing we really must concentrate on is getting a good nucleus of 15 players and try to stop chopping and changing.
