Skipper Jones aims for historic victory

Skipper Ryan Jones believes victory against New Zealand could finally turn Wales into a force to be reckoned with on the international stage.
Wales have been accused of being mentally weak since they threw away a 16-3 lead against reigning world champions South Africa at the Millennium Stadium at the start of this month.

But the Ospreys No8 insists that will all change if Warren Gatland’s men emerge with a victory this summer and could propel Wales into the upper echelons of the international game.

“We know if we can win one of these two Tests, then that could be the tipping point that changes the team psyche and means we start winning the close ones instead of losing them,” said Jones.

“There’s no bigger game than New Zealand in their own back yard – they are probably the most complete team in the world.

“We’ve got a huge amount of respect for them. But we are here to take them on and we are all really looking forward to it.

“We will be giving everything. It’s going to be full pelt for 80 minutes, but we won’t be taking a backwards step.

“This is a great place to tour. It’s possibly the toughest place in the world to go and play rugby, the highest mountain you can climb in the game.

“So it’s going to be an incredibly tough couple of weeks for us, but we hope we can produce something historic.”
