Wales can cause an upset, says Jones

Lock Alun-Wyn Jones insists Wales will not be playing damage limitation when they take on the All Blacks this month.
Warren Gatland’s men ran reigning world champions South Africa close at the Millennium Stadium at the weekend before eventually losing 34-31.

New Zealand will be odds-on favourites to win both Test matches against Wales but Jones believes confidence in the camp is high despite their Springbok defeat.

“You can see how we played against South Africa for the first 25 minutes - if we can sustain that for another 10 minutes and have teams on the ropes just before half-time, then we know we can come out stronger and our second half performances are good,” he said.

“We’re not far off, we keep saying we’re not that far off. Gats (Warren Gatland) has given us that message and we have to carry it on.

“We were 16-3 up at one stage against South Africa and that’s the time where you’ve got to lock up games.

“We’ve seen the regions do it, and I think we need to transfer that across now to the international scene.

“I’ve stood here before and said the same things, but we’ve got a great opportunity to go out to New Zealand - a team that far outranks us - and cause an upset.”
