Wade faces Sevens dilemna

England Under-20 winger Christian Wade admits he is at a careers crossroads as he weighs up whether his future lies in sevens or the XV game.
The 19-year-old, who is on the books of Wasps academy, again impressed for England at the Emirates Airline London Sevens with three well-taken tries.

That adds to the 19 tries he has racked up in the IRB World Sevens Series already with only Ben Gollings, the godfather of English sevens, having scored more for his team this year.

But with Shaun Edwards taking him under his wing at Adams Park, Wade – who now heads to Argentina for the IRB Junior World Championship – revealed he is still to make his mind up whether to full-time in the shortened version of the game with the 2016 Olympic Games on the horizon.

He said: “It is incredibly hard choice to make because I am so young so whatever I decide I am going to have see through to the end.

“If my choice does not work out then I will always be left with the thought ‘what if I had chosen the other option’.

“I have not sat down to think about it yet and I am trying to concentrate on the present and not the future.

“Being at the Olympics is a massive thing for everybody. An opportunity like that does not come round very often.

“I was into athletics when I was younger so the Olympics has always been one of my goals. For me to have that opportunity again in a different sport is great.

“The sport is effectively going full-time but then I love playing XVs as well and I know what great opportunities I have in that game.

“At the moment I am enjoying the challenge of trying to balance it. I have been going between the two camps but they are different types of games so it can be difficult to change your mindset.

“In Sevens my main goal to work on my defence, especially my tackling and when to go high and when to go low.

“Attacking has always been one of my strengths so we have paid close attention to different aspects of my defence.

“Having Shaun Edwards, who is one of the best coaches in the world, has been invaluable.

“Being quite a small player he has advised me to watch videos of guys like Jason Robinson and look at David Lemi in matches to see how they deal with it.”
