Bortolami started his playing career with Padova, where he made his debut in the second row, aged only 18. At the age of 22, Bortolami was thrown in at the deep end when he was made Italy's youngest ever captain against New Zealand. He is a superb lineout technician and he was sorely missed by the Azzurri during the opening rounds of last year's RBS 6 Nations.
