Thomas made his debut on the 2005 summer tour to North America and his dynamic, high-energy style had firmly established him as Wales' No.1 hooker by last year's RBS 6 Nations. Thomas faces competition for his jersey from Matthew Rees. He was on the bench for November's draw with Australia, but reclaimed the starting role against New Zealand. Thomas credits Mefin Davies, who he replaced as Wales hooker, for helping his development. He signed with Cardiff four years ago, but moved out of the capital, preferring a quieter life in the valleys.
