Parker announces Scotland women's training squad

Scotland preparations for this year's Women's World Cup gathered pace with the announcement of a 33-strong extended training squad.
The squad will be whittled down to 26 in July for the tournament which kicks off south of the border in England in August.

Head Coach Gary Parker said: “We could have put together a squad of 26 straight away but feel that there's competition for places and everyone is working really hard to force their way into the group.”

Talented youngsters Annabel Sergeant, Celia Hawthorn and Nicola Halfpenny keep their places after impressing during their fourth place Six Nations finish.

The squad will be put through their paces with two capped tests against South Africa on June 5 and 12 before a training fixture against Ireland on July 18.

"We need to be playing more and more, and the opportunity arose to take on South Africa - you need these sort of high intensity games in the run-up to the World Cup,” added Parker.

"The focus, however, is to concentrate on ourselves - it's all about how well we prepare for this great challenge."

The Scots open their World Cup campaign against Canada on Friday August 20. France and Sweden are also in their group.
