Brown double gives Johnson a nudge

Forgotten England full-back Mike Brown enhanced his claims for a place on Martin Johnson's summer tour by grabbing two tries in Harlequins' 46-11demolition of Leeds.
Brown has endured a difficult touring career with England, featuring in the 58-10 defeat to South Africa during England’s disastrous summer tour of 2007 and forming part of the side who laboured in New Zealand in 2008.

But the 24-year-old grabbed the first of his two scored on the hour mark after two Nick Evans penalties and a converted Tom Williams try put the hosts firmly in control.

George Lowe and Chris Brooker both went over before Brown crossed for his second score and David Strettle’s try added the gloss for Conor O’Shea’s men, who conceded a late consolation to Alfie To'oala.

In Saturday’s only other Guinness Premiership game Armitage brothers Steffon and Delon grabbed a try each to move London Irish back into the play-off places at the expense of rock-bottom Worcester in a 23-13 win.

Willie Walker converted Alex Grove’s try to give the Warriors a surprise lead but the Armitage brothers proved too hot to handle and Chris Malone’s late penalty denied the hosts a bonus point.

"I am encouraged by this performance but it is tough times and we are in the middle of a series of battles that will determine our fate,” said Worcester and former Wales boss Mike Ruddock.

"But as long as I can see the players are putting in every effort in training and trying their best to do as well as they can that is all I can ask for at the moment."
