Gatland hopeful star performers will return.

Wales boss Warren Gatland is keeping his fingers crossed his walking wounded recover for this weekend's clash with Italy in Cardiff.

Gatland has been starved of many of Wales’ big-name performers during this season’s RBS 6 Nations – and the results have backed up this depressing statistic.

Wales lost at Twickenham against England in their opening game, scrapped to a last-gasp win against Scotland and crashed against France and Ireland.

Gatland is hopeful scrum-half Mike Phillips and skipper Ryan Jones recover for the clash with the Italians.

Phillips hurt his knee in his first game back from ankle trouble for the Ospreys, while Jones is still recovering from the calf problem that kept him out against Ireland.

Lock Bradley Davies is likely to be fit again after a knee injury forced him off in Dublin, while full-back Lee Byrne, who also limped off at Croke Park, should return.
