Edinburgh coach Moffat tipping Thompson for Scotland debut.
Edinburgh coach Rob Moffat believes utility back Jim Thompson can fill the breach in Scotland's devastated backline.
Thompson was called up to Andy Robinson's squad for the clash with Italy after long-term injuries to wingers Rory Lamont, Thom Evans and Chris Paterson has left them down to bare bones.
Having scored two tries in his last three appearances for the capital side the uncapped 25-year-old is certainly hitting form at the right time and despite being unable to train because of a minor knock Moffat indicated he is ready to take the step up.
He said: “With Scotland having their entire back three players out that means opportunities for somebody else.
“We’re really pleased with the way Jim is developing and he did some good things against Ireland A but he also did some not so good things.
“As to his chances of being involved against Italy you never say 'no chance'.
"Richie Vernon hadn't played a lot of rugby for Glasgow then he was in for Scotland during the Autumn Tests so it might be the same with Jim.”
